Steel’s shift to electric arc furnaces quietly elevates graphite electrodes as strategic bottlenecks in the global green transition.
For nearly two centuries, steelmaking barely changed. Then climate pressure arrived. Blast furnaces carbon-heavy, always-on giants—began giving way to electric arc furnaces (EAFs). Instead of coal, EAFs use electricity to melt steel, cutting emissions by up to 90% and allowing flexible operations.
But this shift has a hidden dependency: graphite electrodes. Without them, electric arcs cannot form. They conduct massive current, survive 3,000°C+, and become stronger under heat. There is no practical substitute.
This is where the bottleneck appears. Electrode manufacturing is capital-intensive, technologically complex, and protected by multi-year customer qualification. Add to this a raw-material choke point—needle coke—now increasingly diverted to EV batteries. The result: consolidation and a “Darwinian reset,” where weaker players exit and survivors gain pricing power.
History offers a clue. In 2017–19, environmental crackdowns in China wiped out supply just as demand surged. Prices spiked. Profits exploded for survivors. Today, conditions rhyme again:
