🧣 US Tariffs Tighten the Noose Around Indian Textiles

The recent U.S. decision to raise tariffs on Indian textile exports — in many cases up to 50-60% or more for certain knitted and woven garments — has jolted one of India’s core export sectors. Here’s what’s happening under the hood: Many garment units in Tirupur, Surat, and other hubs are seeing orders get paused or diverted. The cost disadvantage makes Indian goods notably more expensive than similar goods from Bangladesh, Vietnam, or Pakistan. Margins, already thin (often 5-7%), are expected to shrink by 200-300 basis points, as exporters struggle to absorb tariff increases while maintaining competitive pricing. The government has responded by temporarily exempting cotton import duties to ease raw-material costs, and exploring relief measures for affected exporters. The backdrop is this: global supply chains are reconfiguring post-COVID; Indian textile makers had seen an opportunity as “China+1” alternatives. But tariffs can reverse some of that momentum if competitiveness falls sharply. Stocks That Could Be Impacted: These are companies with exposure in textiles, which may feel the tariff pressure — or adapt depending on strategy, scale, export mix: Grasim Industries Ltd.

GRASIM
— a big player in fibers (VSF) and fabrics. Exposure to global raw material and export markets could hurt if tariffs bite hard. Welspun India Ltd.
WELSPUNLIV
— strong in home textiles exports; may see orders shift away or renegotiated. Trident Ltd.
TRIDENT
— home textile / linen maker; global competition and cost pressures present both risk and opportunity depending on adaptiveness. Raymond Ltd.
RAYMOND
— though more focused on domestic apparel and branded segments, any spillover effects from export disruptions could affect input sourcing or brand pricing. 📌 Learning Takeaway (20 words): US tariff increases squeeze export margins in textiles; resilience depends on cost control, product differentiation, and ability to access alternate markets.
