Vi’s Loan Roadblock: Why Relief Isn’t the Same as Recovery

The government’s recent AGR relief helped Vi manage immediate cash stress. It bought time. But time alone doesn’t convince lenders. Banks and institutions looking at Vi’s ₹35,000 crore loan proposal are asking a harder question: what happens next?
The hesitation comes from the weight Vi still carries. Spectrum dues of around ₹1.25 lakh crore loom large. These aren’t accounting entries; they are real future cash outflows. For lenders, this changes everything. Lending isn’t about sympathy or survival — it’s about predictable revenue, sustainable margins, and confidence that debt can be serviced without constant restructuring.
That’s why lenders are revisiting Vi’s 2024 creditworthiness study. They want updated assumptions: subscriber trends, ARPU improvement, capex needs, and most importantly, free cash flows after spectrum payments. Relief may improve optics, but it doesn’t automatically fix the balance sheet.
In capital-heavy sectors like telecom, debt is not judged by intent but by math. Until Vi can clearly show that its future cash generation can outpace its obligations, caution will dominate decisions.
This episode is a reminder of a simple truth: regulatory support can delay stress, but only business performance resolves it.
