πŸ”† When the Sun Makes Electricity Free: The Curious Case of Zero Power Prices in India

On May 26, something extraordinary happened. Power prices on India's electricity exchange fell to almost zero β€” just 11 paise per unit. That's not cheap β€” that’s basically free. Why? Because the sun was shining too much. Solar panels across the country pumped out electricity faster than we could use it. Power generators, especially solar, flooded the market during low-demand midday hours. Supply skyrocketed. Demand didn’t. Result? Electricity became cheaper than a cup of tap water. But here’s the twist: this isn’t entirely good news. Solar plants with no fixed contracts struggled to recover costs. DISCOMs had to buy power at β‚Ή2.50 and sell it for β‚Ή0.10 β€” a huge loss. And old-school coal and gas plants couldn’t compete, risking shutdowns when we still need them at night. It’s the classic β€œduck curve”: solar generation peaks at noon, but demand peaks at night. πŸ”‹ The solution? Batteries. Lots of them. India has less than 0.2 GWh of battery storage. To absorb and shift solar power, we need 74 GW by 2032. But battery economics is still a bottleneck β€” we need smart policies, storage incentives, and patient capital. πŸ“ˆ Stocks that may benefit (for educational purpose only): Amara Raja Energy πŸ”‹ : Entered Lithium-ion cell manufacturing and advanced battery solutions.

India’s solar boom has outpaced its storage. We’re getting more free energy than we can handle. The sun is generous β€” now it's our turn to be wise. India's solar boom crashed power prices to near zero β€” unlocking urgent lessons in energy storage, pricing reforms, and stock market potential.
