π When the Sun Makes Electricity Free: The Curious Case of Zero Power Prices in India
On May 26, something extraordinary happened. Power prices on India's electricity exchange fell to almost zero β just 11 paise per unit. That's not cheap β thatβs basically free.
Why? Because the sun was shining too much.
Solar panels across the country pumped out electricity faster than we could use it. Power generators, especially solar, flooded the market during low-demand midday hours. Supply skyrocketed. Demand didnβt. Result? Electricity became cheaper than a cup of tap water.
But hereβs the twist: this isnβt entirely good news.
Solar plants with no fixed contracts struggled to recover costs. DISCOMs had to buy power at βΉ2.50 and sell it for βΉ0.10 β a huge loss. And old-school coal and gas plants couldnβt compete, risking shutdowns when we still need them at night.
Itβs the classic βduck curveβ: solar generation peaks at noon, but demand peaks at night.
π The solution? Batteries. Lots of them.
India has less than 0.2 GWh of battery storage. To absorb and shift solar power, we need 74 GW by 2032. But battery economics is still a bottleneck β we need smart policies, storage incentives, and patient capital.
