Will India Get Self-Driving Cars?

Last week at an AI summit, Sundar Pichai shared a simple line after riding in a Waymo car in San Francisco. His 83-year-old father said he’d be more impressed if it worked on India’s busy roads. That line matters. Self-driving cars today are not “drive anywhere” machines. They work only in cities that are deeply mapped in advance. The journey began with the DARPA Grand Challenge in 2004, where no car finished. By 2005, Stanford’s “Stanley” completed the course. Google later built on that effort, and Waymo now runs thousands of robotaxis across US cities. But India is different. Dense traffic, mixed vehicles, unpredictable road behavior. For autonomy to work here, we need better lane markings, smart traffic systems, reliable maps, and strong 5G networks. The opportunity is huge—but so is the complexity.
