Pharma Stocks Slide as Nifty Pharma Index Ends Four-Day Rally
Pharma shares came under selling pressure on September 15, dragging the Nifty Pharma index lower by over 1 percent in mid-day trade and ending its four-day winning streak. The sector emerged as one of the top losers of the session on profit booking and regulatory concerns. Top Losers: Dr. Reddy’s fell nearly 2% after the USFDA issued a Form 483 with five observations at its Bachupally biologics facility. J B Chemicals dropped 1.5% to ₹1,673.40. Torrent Pharma, Biocon, Aurobindo, Glenmark, and Natco Pharma slipped over 1% each, while Lupin, Zydus Life, and Sun Pharma were down close to 1%. Gainers: Granules India and Abbott India rose more than 1% each. Gland Pharma, Alkem Labs, Divi’s Labs, and IPCA Labs posted marginal gains. Global Overhang: Concerns resurfaced after US President Donald Trump reiterated plans to raise tariffs on pharma imports to as high as 250% within 12–18 months, despite initial exemptions. The revival of the BioSecure Act in the US also added to uncertainty around biotech supply chains. Analysts’ View: Experts see short-term headwinds from US pricing pressure and regulatory challenges, but maintain a positive structural outlook driven by CRDMO demand, specialty drugs, and complex generics. Technical analysts highlighted that despite the correction, the Nifty Pharma index trades above key moving averages, signaling a bullish undertone. The index is down nearly 5% year-to-date, and analysts expect a gradual recovery, with selective buying opportunities in fundamentally strong, diversified players. #StockMarket #PharmaStocks #NiftyPharma #DrReddys #USFDA #TrumpTariffs #BioSecureAct #IndianPharma #StockMarketIndia
