Trump Secures Nearly 10% US Stake in Intel to Boost Domestic Chip Manufacturing

In a landmark move, President Donald Trump finalized a deal granting the US government a 9.9% stake in Intel Corp., marking an unprecedented intervention to revive the struggling chipmaker and strengthen domestic semiconductor production. Under the agreement, Intel will issue 433.3 million shares worth $8.9 billion, funded by unused allocations from the US Chips and Science Act and the Secure Enclave program. Together with $2.2 billion already received, Intel’s federal backing totals $11.1 billion. The US government will remain a passive shareholder, with no board seat or governance rights. Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan welcomed the deal, saying it would help cement America’s technology leadership. Trump hailed the pact as a “great Deal for America and INTEL”, calling chip production a matter of national security. The deal includes a five-year warrant allowing the government to purchase an additional 5% stake at $20 per share, contingent on Intel’s ownership of its chipmaking arm. The transaction instantly strengthens Intel’s capital base for its $100 billion US manufacturing expansion, including new facilities in Arizona. Intel shares rose 5.5% to $24.80 on Friday, though they slipped 1% in post-market trading. Despite skepticism from analysts about Intel’s competitiveness, the administration views the deal as critical to securing the US semiconductor supply chain and preventing future shortages.
