VODAFONE IDEA FACES ₹638 CRORE GST PENALTY EVEN AS AGR RELIEF BRINGS TEMPORARY BREATHING SPACE

Debt-laden telecom operator Vodafone Idea Ltd has received a penalty order amounting to ₹637.91 crore from the Office of the Additional Commissioner, Central GST, Ahmedabad South, under the CGST Act, 2017. The order was issued under Section 74, alleging short payment of tax and excess availment of input tax credit, and includes tax demand, interest and penalty. The order was received on December 31, 2025, just a day after Vodafone Idea received major relief on its long-pending AGR dues. The Union Cabinet recently approved a 5-year moratorium on AGR payments and allowed reassessment of capped AGR dues, offering temporary financial relief to the struggling telecom operator. Vodafone Idea has clarified that it does not agree with the GST order and will pursue appropriate legal remedies. The company stated that the maximum financial impact would be limited to the tax, interest and penalty levied in the order. Meanwhile, the company is also set to receive ₹5,836 crore from promoter Vodafone Group under a revised settlement agreement. This includes ₹2,307 crore in cash over the next 12 months and the right to monetize Vodafone Group’s 328 crore earmarked shares, currently valued at approximately ₹3,529 crore. This financial inflow is expected to provide crucial liquidity support to Vodafone Idea as it continues to manage heavy debt obligations and regulatory challenges.
