Bank of India: Deeper Value Than State Bank of India?

BANKINDIA
Bank of India trades at a steep discount to peers, offering clear value for shareholders seeking undervalued PSU banks. At around 0.76-0.8 times standalone book value, shares cost less than the bank's net worth per share, compared to State Bank of India's 1.7 times premium. This gap suggests potential re-rating upside if execution continues, making it beneficial for patient investors chasing capital appreciation. The bank's Q2 FY26 results reinforce operational strength. Net profit rose about 8% year-on-year to Rs 2,556 crore, driven by sharply lower credit costs at 0.28% and robust 14% advances growth to Rs 7.09 lakh crore. Retail, agriculture and MSME loans expanded 17%, signaling diversified momentum without over-reliance on corporate lending. Deposits grew 10% to Rs 8.53 lakh crore, supporting liquidity. Asset quality shines brighter, with gross NPAs down to 2.54% and net NPAs at a low 0.65%. Provision coverage exceeds 93%, reflecting prudent risk management that protects shareholder capital. Capital adequacy remains solid at 16.7% CRAR, providing buffer for growth. Net interest margins dipped slightly due to rate adjustments but should recover as deposits reprice. For shareholders, this combination is highly valuable. Low valuation embeds a margin of safety, while improving profitability, clean balance sheet and retail focus reduce cyclical risks. Overseas operations in 15 countries add diversification, contributing positively to profits. Digital initiatives like Omni NEO and WhatsApp banking enhance efficiency, boosting long-term returns on equity. Risks exist—PSU governance uncertainties or slower NIM recovery could delay re-rating—but fundamentals point to 2026 as a compelling entry. Trading below book amid peers at premiums, Bank of India offers superior risk-reward for value hunters, potentially delivering strong returns as markets recognize its turnaround.
