BPCL vs IOC: Which OMC Wins?

BPCL
IOC
BPCL and IOC are both strong PSU oil stocks, but the better choice depends on whether you want efficiency or scale. For shareholders, BPCL looks more rewarding on operating quality, while IOC offers stability, lower valuation, and a stronger dividend-led comfort zone. IOC is the larger company and remains the market leader in scale, refining and distribution. BPCL is smaller, but it has shown better efficiency in recent quarters, which often matters more for returns than size alone. In Q1 FY26, BPCL reported a profit of ₹6,124 crore, ahead of IOC’s ₹5,689 crore, even though IOC is much bigger. BPCL also posted a gross refining margin of $4.88 per barrel in Q1 FY26, compared with IOC’s $2.15 per barrel. Its refinery run rate was 118% of installed capacity, against IOC’s 107%. BPCL also sold 153 kilolitres of fuel per outlet per month, higher than IOC’s 130 kilolitres, showing better outlet productivity. From a shareholder angle, BPCL’s stronger profit and efficiency are positive because they can support earnings growth and valuation rerating. The downside is that the stock may already price in some of this strength, so upside can depend on sustained margins. IOC, on the other hand, may benefit shareholders who prefer a cheaper valuation and potentially steadier dividend flow. The main risk for both companies is crude price volatility, policy pressure, and margin swings in the fuel business. BPCL’s stronger numbers are beneficial if they continue, but a sharp margin reversal can quickly hurt returns. IOC’s scale may protect it better in tough cycles, but its lower efficiency can limit stock price momentum. Final View For long-term investors focused on quality and earnings momentum, BPCL appears more attractive. For investors who want a larger, more defensive PSU with value support, IOC remains useful. In simple terms, BPCL is better for growth-minded shareholders, while IOC is better for value and stability-minded shareholders.
