India’s aerospace and defence market could approach ₹5 lakh crore by 2033, supported by aircraft demand, government backing and local supply chains. Data Patterns is positioned through in-house design, prototyping, testing and manufacturing of electronics for radars, avionics, electronic warfare, communications and naval systems.
The company is moving beyond individual subsystems towards complete aerospace solutions. This could increase its value per programme. Aerospace orders are a major part of its ₹927.7 crore order book as of Q1FY27. Including July inflows and negotiated contracts, the book rises to ₹2,654 crore. A pipeline of ₹2,000-4,000 crore and expected revenue growth of 20-25% over the next two to three years offer visibility for investors now.
The latest performance is mixed. Q1FY27 revenue rose 16.8% year-on-year to ₹116 crore, but EBITDA fell 2.2% to ₹31.4 crore, with the margin at 27%. Net profit declined 13.5% to ₹22.1 crore. Exports contributed 12.8% of revenue. Management expects EBITDA margins of 35-40%, depending on execution.
For shareholders, the opportunity is attractive. A large order book, intellectual-property-led products, indigenous procurement can support earnings. However, orders create value only when converted into revenue. Delays, cost overruns, government dependence and uneven execution could affect returns.
Valuation is the main concern. Data Patterns trades at about 62.8 times EV/EBITDA, above its three-year historical multiple of 48 times and the industry median of 40.3 times. ROE of 15.2% and ROCE of 21.9% are healthy, but the premium leaves little room for disappointment. Existing shareholders may hold if execution improves. Fresh investors should seek a sensible entry price and track order conversion and cash generation.#WatchOutFor#EquityResearch#TrendingSectors#FundamentalViews
