Data Patterns: Can a Margin Machine Become Defence’s Next Star?

DATAPATTNS
India’s defence electronics sector is led by Bharat Electronics (BEL), the government-backed giant with end-to-end capabilities and a fortress balance sheet. Data Patterns, meanwhile, is a smaller, design-driven challenger specialising in radar, avionics, and electronic warfare. Unlike BEL’s broad contractor role, Data Patterns focuses on in-house electronics integration—making it an expert rather than a generalist. BEL posted Rs44,400 crore revenue in 1QFY26. Its massive order book and 28% EBITDA margins highlight scale and stability. Data Patterns, in contrast, saw Rs7,100 crore revenue in FY25 but boasted a robust 39% EBITDA margin and zero debt. The latest order book is Rs8,100 crore, and recent wins include a BrahMos seeker flight test, opening doors to production and multi-year maintenance contracts. Growth for Data Patterns depends on turning technical pilots into platforms, boosting recurring revenue and repeating wins like BrahMos into stable, long-term contracts. Management guides for 20–25% growth and 35–40% EBITDA in FY26, aiming to scale without sacrificing margins. Yet, quarterly swings in revenue are common, as project clearances and order flows can be lumpy. The main risk is high valuation. Data Patterns trades around 66x P/E, a premium for excellence but potentially vulnerable if orders or execution falter. BEL, in comparison, trades at about 51x P/E but has greater scale and diversified programs that buffer volatility. For investors, Data Patterns offers operating leverage and superior margins if growth and execution hold steady. However, any hiccup can trigger market correction. If the company turns innovation into recurring business and maintains margin discipline, it could rerate upwards and become a durable ‘mini-BEL’. Investors seeking growth and willing to accept risk may find value, but perfection is priced in—there’s little room for error.
