Devyani International: Expansion or Erosion?

DEVYANI
Devyani International stands tall as India’s largest Yum Brands franchisee, operating 2,145 restaurants in India and overseas. Its reach includes KFC, Pizza Hut, and global café chains like Costa Coffee and Tealive. In India, Devyani runs 704 KFC and 618 Pizza Hut stores plus newer homegrown brands. Growth has been rapid—309 new stores added in the past year—boosting revenue by 11% to ₹13.5 billion in Q1 FY26. Around 69% came from India, while international outlets in Thailand, Nigeria, and Nepal expand the business footprint. However, while expanding furiously, profitability has suffered. Gross margins held at 68.2%, but EBITDA margin dropped sharply from 18.3% to 15.1% as costs rose. Profit after tax collapsed by 90% to ₹22 million, showing growth isn’t translating to bottom-line gains. KFC India’s revenue climbed 10.5% but average daily sales per store dropped. Same-store sales growth remains weak, though signs of recovery are visible. Pizza Hut sales improved only marginally and store economics are still fragile. Franchise and in-house brands now contribute more, hinting at future diversity in earnings. For shareholders, these trends are a double-edged sword. Aggressive expansion and brand variety can drive long-term value, especially as rising household savings and festive season demand could revive discretionary spending. Devyani’s move to grow emerging brands and international branches offers new hope beyond KFC and Pizza Hut. But weak margins and plunging profits present short-term risks. Valuations are more reasonable compared to history, making the stock attractive. Ultimately, shareholder benefit will depend on Devyani’s ability to balance store growth with healthier margins. If operational efficiency returns and brand recovery sustains, value creation will follow. Execution holds the key at this crucial stage.
