Hindustan Zinc - Glittering Reserves, Cloudy Prospects

HINDZINC
Hindustan Zinc—India's largest zinc producer and a silver powerhouse—boasts staggering fundamentals: 453 million tonnes of reserves, margins over 50%, market leadership, and globally low production costs. Demand cues are strong, with zinc needed for infrastructure and silver key to renewable tech. Yet, the stock remains oddly stagnant, and investor confidence is shaky. Despite robust earnings (₹10,436 crore net profit in FY25), the company paid out ₹12,000 crore in dividends—borrowing over ₹2,000 crore to do so. Result? A transition from net cash in FY24 to ₹6,000 crore in net debt by FY25. Worse, this signals a pattern, driven by promoter Vedanta’s dependency on cash flows to support its own structure. The company is investing ₹12,000 crore to expand capacity—targeting 2 million tonnes by FY30. But how sustainable is growth when dividends cannibalize investment capital? Governance troubles deepen the fog, with brand-fee disputes, past asset sale attempts, and concerns over shareholder fairness. Operationally, Hindustan Zinc delivers. Q4FY25 showed 20% revenue growth and a four-year-low production cost. But even stellar numbers won’t matter if capital allocation misfires and promoter priorities conflict with long-term growth. With earnings forecast to remain strong, over ₹50,000 crore in cash flows are expected over the next 5 years. But unless governance tightens and focus shifts toward reinvestment—this giant risks becoming a cautionary tale. Investors should beware: beneath the shine, lies a business trapped by its own dividends.
