KPIT Technologies: Q1FY27 revenue up 8.9%; profit fell 32%

KPITTECH
KPIT Technologies (NSE: KPITTECH) is a global automotive software company focused on software-defined vehicles (SDV). It works with OEMs on powertrain, ADAS, and EV software. Its platforms -- Beacon for automotive software, Cymotive for cybersecurity, and N-Dream for in-car gaming -- extend its reach beyond engineering hours. What happened: Q1FY27 revenue rose 8.9% YoY to Rs 1,675 crore, but EBITDA fell 11.2% to Rs 288 crore; margin contracted 380 bps to 17.2%. Net profit fell 32.3% to Rs 116.4 crore. Revenue had compounded from Rs 641 crore (FY19) to Rs 6,455 crore (FY26) at a 20.8% EBITDA -- but that growth is now under pressure. KPIT has engaged seven off-highway and commercial vehicle OEMs to cut passenger-car dependence. Why it matters: European OEMs are restructuring under Chinese EV competition, rising costs, and tariff pressure -- deferring engineering programmes and SDV spend. Near-term spending is cyclical even as the long-term SDV opportunity is real. Management targets 22-24% EBITDA margin by FY29 if delayed programmes restart. At 20.9x P/E against a 5-year median of 57.9x, significant risk is already priced in. What I am watching: Programme restart timelines at European OEMs, Q2FY27 deal wins, and whether off-highway engagements convert to revenue. My stance: Revenue is growing, but a 380 bps margin drop and 32% profit fall show how exposed KPIT is to OEM capex cycles. The SDV thesis holds long-term. But earnings stay vulnerable until delayed programmes restart and margins recover. At 20.9x -- well below its 57.9x median -- the discount is real, but so is the risk. I do not hold a position in KPIT Technologies at the time of writing. This is not investment advice.
