Nestle India Faces Margin Heat: What Shareholders Need to Know

Nestle India’s shares took a beating after Q1 results showed a steep fall in gross margin, sparked by rising coffee prices. The company saw its share price fall 5% in a single trading session, raising concerns among investors. A major brokerage slightly lowered its price target for Nestle India to Rs 2,820, citing worry over margin contraction. Gross margin slipped by 250 basis points year-on-year to 55.2% due to expensive coffee, an important raw material. There is, however, a silver lining for shareholders. After Q1, coffee prices dropped around 30% and could support a gradual recovery in margins. Despite this, the brokerage cut its earnings forecasts for the next two years, reflecting higher than expected expenses on capital projects and depreciation costs. On the positive side, Nestle’s underlying business showed some strength. Domestic revenue climbed 5.5%, and exports soared 16% compared to last year. Volume-led growth returned in three key product categories: prepared dishes, beverages, and confectionery. Seven out of Nestle’s top 12 brands reported double-digit growth, though milk and nutrition products lagged behind. Commodity trends also bring encouragement for shareholders. Coffee prices are likely to stay low, and other key raw materials like cocoa, edible oil, and milk are expected to be stable or fall in price. A normal monsoon may ease milk costs further, supporting profitability in coming quarters. Financially, Nestle India reported a 13.4% drop in net profit to Rs 647 crore, although revenue grew 6% to Rs 5,096 crore. Volume increased 3%, but flat EBITDA fell short of market expectations. In summary, while the margin squeeze is a short-term negative for shareholders, the expected fall in input costs, stable volume growth, and a resilient product portfolio suggest a more positive outlook ahead. Volatility may persist, but long-term prospects remain intact for patient investors.
