ONGC: Energy Giant on the Move — Shareholders’ Gain or Strain?

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (

ONGC
), India’s largest crude oil and natural gas producer, is navigating a changing energy landscape. For shareholders, its journey has been a mix of resilience and uncertainty. In the June 2025 quarter, consolidated net profit slipped 1.3% to ₹9,804 crore from ₹9,936 crore a year earlier, due to slightly lower sales. Despite this, EBITDA climbed almost 15% to ₹28,480 crore, reflecting strong operational performance and cost control. Yet, its share price is down over 30% in the past year, hurt by weak oil prices and sectoral headwinds. A key positive for shareholders is ONGC halting its output decline. Production gains from new fields like KG-98/2 and a partnership with BP to boost recovery at Mumbai High — potentially by 60% over the next decade — promise higher volumes and revenue stability, even in volatile markets. ONGC is also transitioning towards clean energy, targeting 10 GW of renewable capacity and 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen output by 2030. These initiatives could reduce cyclicality linked to crude prices and enhance long-term value. Valuation remains attractive, with a low P/E ratio and solid book value, appealing to value investors. However, risks remain — global oil price weakness, regulatory changes, and high capex for green projects could pressure returns in the near term. For patient investors, ONGC offers a balanced play — leveraging its oil dominance while betting on a low-carbon future. Short-term volatility may persist, but its strategic shift could reward shareholders who stay the course.
