RVNL: India’s Fast-Track Infrastructure Challenger

Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (

RVNL
) is quickly emerging as a major player in India’s infrastructure game, drawing frequent comparisons with engineering giant Larsen & Toubro. Once just a quiet arm of Indian Railways, RVNL has now built up a massive Rs 1 lakh crore order book—almost four times its revenue. The company’s shift from bureaucracy to open-market bidding has been transformative. Now, over half its orders come from competitive tenders, not ministerial assignments. This move has diversified RVNL’s reach into metro projects, highways, ports, and telecom, allowing it to grow beyond just railways. Despite expanding into new sectors, RVNL has managed to keep its operating margins stable around 5–6%. While less than L&T’s 13%, there’s potential for improvement as the mix shifts towards high-value metro, solar, international EPC and maintenance projects. The big opportunity ahead is the Vande Bharat sleeper train project, expected to drive margins higher given its delivery cycle and manufacturing elements. Recent revenue growth has been muted, mainly due to project delays and slow execution on new contracts. Some large deals, including BharatNet and metro projects, faced approval lags and design issues, which impacted billing and margin figures. However, management expects profitability to normalize as these projects scale up through the year. For shareholders, RVNL’s huge order book means strong visibility for future growth. The company is well-positioned in India’s booming public capex cycle and steadily building a reputation for disciplined execution—without excessive costs or bloat. With coming projects in Vande Bharat trains and international EPC, improved margins and steady returns could turn RVNL into a long-term winner, justifying its current premium valuation. If execution remains strong and diversification succeeds, shareholders have plenty to look forward to.
