Shipping Corporation of India: Rs 84,084-crore offshore push

SCI
Shipping Corporation of India (NSE: SCI) is a government-owned shipping company operating tankers, bulk carriers, liners and offshore vessels. Its offshore fleet comprises six anchor-handling tug supply vessels, two PSVs and two multipurpose support vessels. What happened: Q1 FY27 consolidated revenue from operations rose 40.3% YoY to Rs 1,846.56 crore; PAT grew 74.9% YoY to Rs 619.34 crore. The Technical and Offshore segment grew 11.71% YoY to Rs 80.80 crore, just 4.4% of total revenue. In August 2026, SCI extended the SCI Delhi container vessel charter for seven more years. In March 2026, it ordered a methanol dual-fuel PSV from Mazagon Dock for US$39 million, a long-term fleet investment with no near-term revenue impact. Why it matters: The Union Cabinet approved the Rs 84,084-crore Samudra Manthan National Offshore Exploration Scheme in August 2026, running through FY2031. Eligible deepwater wells can receive up to 50% drilling cost support, capped at Rs 675 crore per well. Higher exploration activity could lift PSV charter demand, but offshore is only one part of SCI's diversified business. Tankers, not offshore, drove the Q1 earnings jump. What I am watching: Technical and Offshore as a share of consolidated revenue, PSV charter rates and utilisation, and whether the new methanol PSV secures a firm charter before delivery. My stance: SCI is a diversified shipping stock with a small offshore option in it. The Samudra Manthan scheme is meaningful, but at a PE of 8x, the market is not pricing in an offshore windfall. The offshore segment needs to cross well past 4% of revenue to shift the earnings needle. I do not hold a position in Shipping Corporation of India at the time of writing. This is not investment advice.
