Shipping Corporation of India: Setting Sail for Shareholder Gains

Shipping Corporation of India (

SCI
), India’s biggest flag carrier, is moving steadily forward with strong operational and financial results. Celebrating 75 years, SCI posted a standalone net profit of ₹814 crore in FY25—its highest in 15 years—while consolidated profit reached ₹844 crore, surpassing the previous year. Revenue from operations also improved, driven by better performance in liner, bulk, and tanker segments. The board has approved a dividend of ₹6.59 per share, marking a two-decade high and directly rewarding shareholders. For shareholders, SCI’s growth approach is centered on expanding its fleet and modernizing assets. Recently, the company acquired two Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs), with the first already delivered and the second on the way. Plans also include adding more vessels across container, gas, product carrier, and offshore segments. These moves help SCI stay ahead in capturing demand in India's growing trade sector. SCI’s future is aligned with sustainability trends and government policy. As global regulations urge for net-zero emissions, SCI is investing in greener operations. Initiatives such as energy-efficient ships and environmental compliance offer long-term benefits, supporting both competitiveness and regulatory readiness. Importantly, SCI remains at the heart of India’s maritime ambitions, benefiting from government support like the ₹25,000 crore Maritime Development Fund and schemes for shipbuilding and inland shipping. The ongoing strategic divestment plan may unlock further value for shareholders, as non-core assets have already been spun off to streamline focus. Overall, SCI’s financial strength, asset growth, commitment to sustainability, and alignment with national policy position it as a valuable long-term play for shareholders. While cyclical market risks persist, its steady dividends, fleet expansion, and strong balance sheet offer stability and upside potential.
