Sterling and Wilson: Solar Success or Shareholder Stress?

SWSOLAR
Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy (SWRE), now backed by Reliance, has emerged as a leader in solar EPC and O&M services both locally and globally. Its financial turnaround in FY25 has been notable, with revenue more than doubling to ₹6,301 crore and EBITDA turning positive at ₹247 crore after major operating improvements and clearing old project hurdles. The EBITDA margin reached nearly 4%, showing the firm’s regained financial discipline. A strong order book of ₹9,096 crore—about 1.4 times annual revenue—provides solid visibility for future growth. Key clients include top domestic names like NTPC Green Energy and JSW Group. While India remains the company’s main market, overseas opportunities are also developing. SWRE’s robust performance also owes much to reliable promoters, including Reliance New Energy, holding the majority stake. Policy tailwinds are set to benefit the firm further, as new government mandates for battery storage alongside solar projects promise to create additional high-margin EPC demand. Management expects at least 10% of future revenues from storage contracts. Lower financing costs, driven by improved ratings and expanded credit lines, will support expansion. For shareholders, SWRE’s financial recovery and order pipeline offer comfort. However, the company’s valuation has surged, raising some worry about future upside and risk if market sentiment sours or policy support fades. Project execution and margin stability remain potential hurdles, due to cost volatility and tight delivery deadlines in the EPC arena. Overall, SWRE seems valuable for investors seeking solid solar sector exposure, but its high valuation means one must weigh growth prospects against possible volatility and market corrections. Success now depends on sustained execution and policy support, positioning shareholder returns on a knife’s edge between reward and risk.
