Sundaram Finance: Is This Steady Climber a Shareholder Delight?

SUNDARMFIN
Sundaram Finance Holdings has quietly outperformed, delivering a 45% return in just three months—emerging as a top pick in the NBFC space. Though smaller than heavyweights like Bajaj Finance, Sundaram Finance is making an impact with Rs 50,000 crore in assets under management (AUM), a sharp jump from about Rs 30,000 crore in FY21. The company’s profit after tax (PAT) has grown at a healthy 18% CAGR over the last four years, crossing Rs 1,500 crore in FY25. For shareholders, the appeal is clear: Sundaram’s strong legacy, respected brand, and careful expansion strategy. With over 700 branches and 600,000 customers, the company is a key player in vehicle and equipment finance, both of which are expected to benefit from supportive regulations. Recent RBI rate cuts and changes in bank lending norms could further boost profitability. Management is optimistic about rural demand and infrastructure growth driving business ahead. Yet, there are challenges. The auto sector makes up 70% of Sundaram’s loan book and faces ongoing market pressures. Disbursement growth is modest at 9% year-on-year. Asset quality has weakened slightly with gross NPA rising from 1.98% to 2.17%. Additionally, capital adequacy has dropped from 24.4% to 20.4%, still well above norms but something to watch. Valuation is perhaps the biggest concern—Sundaram Finance trades at more than 28 times earnings, higher than its usual levels. Though business fundamentals look strong, a price correction is possible, and analyst targets are mixed. For current shareholders, Sundaram Finance offers stability and potential for gradual growth. New investors, however, need to assess the high valuation and sector risks before jumping in. It’s a valuable asset for those seeking consistency, but caution is wise for those eyeing quick, outsized returns.
