Syrma SGS: A High-Margin Path for Patient Shareholders

SYRMA
Syrma SGS charts a unique path in India’s electronics manufacturing space, setting itself apart from big player Dixon Technologies. Dixon thrives on mass-scale production of smartphones and appliances, where margins are razor-thin and volumes drive growth. Syrma, however, focuses on complex, design-rich products in categories like PCB assemblies, RFID modules, industrial, automotive, and medical electronics. These segments bring higher margins and offer resilience against market swings. Syrma’s strategy is to move away from low-margin consumer electronics—now just 35% of its revenues, down from over 50%—towards industrial, auto, and healthcare sectors, which are expanding rapidly and are less commoditized. This shift has resulted in superior EBITDA margins (8.6% in FY25 versus Dixon’s 3.8%), hitting over 10% in recent quarters. By offering partial product design, the company gains pricing power and longer-term contracts, enhancing both stability and profitability. Exports are now a core part of Syrma’s business, forming 30% of revenue and growing fast. International customers across Japan, the US, and Europe highlight the firm’s global appeal and help hedge against domestic cycles. Operationally, Syrma stresses capital discipline, balancing growth with a strong balance sheet and decent returns on capital (16% ROCE). However, risks remain: the stock’s high valuation (66x PE) demands sustained revenue growth and improved capital returns to justify the premium. Global demand for exports can be cyclical and margins could compress if growth lags. For shareholders, Syrma’s differentiated model is a double-edged sword: high margins and export growth are valuable, but they come with the need for continued execution and risk management. If Syrma delivers on its growth and margin targets, investors could see substantial benefits. But patience and attention to evolving risks are required in this high-potential, but premium-priced, EMS story.
