TMPV: Cheap on Value, Mixed on Comfort

TMPV
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles looks inexpensive on headline valuation, but the benefit to shareholders depends on whether profits and margins can stay strong. At around ₹335.60, the stock trades at about 1.10 times book value, with a P/B of 1.10, P/E of 1.50, dividend yield of 0.89%, ROE of 5.47%, and debt to equity of 0.71. The latest reported numbers show revenue of ₹1,07,080 crore and profit of ₹5,878 crore in Mar 2026, while standalone FY26 revenue was ₹58,465 crore, up 20.7% year on year, and unit sales hit 6,41,586, up 15%. The EV business also crossed 92,179 units in FY26, and cumulative EV sales went past 2.5 lakh, which supports the growth story. Why shareholders may like it The valuation is far below the broader auto industry multiple, and the company’s scale, brand strength, and EV leadership can support a rerating if execution remains solid. A low P/E, modest dividend, and strong sales growth can be attractive for investors who want a mix of value and long-term growth. What raises concern The downside is that profitability is still uneven. Mar 2026 core EBITDA margin stood at 5.39%, down from 12.50% in Mar 2025, while PAT margin was -0.41%, showing pressure on earnings quality. The quarterly data also shows volatility, with revenue, EBITDA, and net profit swinging sharply across recent quarters. Shareholder view For shareholders, this looks potentially valuable if Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles can convert growth into stable margins and cash flows. If margins remain weak, the low valuation may reflect real business risk rather than an opportunity.
