Union Bank of India: A Solid Bet for Shareholders?

$UNIONBANK Union Bank of India emerges as a strong PSU banking pick, supported by robust earnings, improving asset quality, healthy loan growth and attractive valuations. Brokerages have set targets around ₹200–212, implying meaningful upside from current levels near ₹187. Strong Financial Performance: Q2 FY26 net profit rose 3.25% QoQ to ₹4,249 crore, with operating profit at ₹6,814 crore and credit growth of 8.14%. In Q1 FY27, net profit surged 29.5% YoY to ₹5,332 crore, aided by higher NII and lower provisions. Retail advances grew 22% and MSME advances 12.5% YoY, while large corporate exposure remained largely flat, reflecting a focus on higher-yield segments. Attractive Valuation: The stock trades at around 6.5x P/E versus a sector average of 10.23x. Systematix and Antique have BUY ratings with targets of ₹205 and ₹212, while Motilal Oswal remains Neutral with a ₹190 target. The valuation offers a favourable risk-reward profile. Shareholder Value: Improving GNPA levels, disciplined provisioning and strong capital adequacy support earnings sustainability. The stock has delivered 21.29% returns in 2026, with dividends providing additional returns. Key Risks: Deposit growth at 13.3% YoY remains below the industry’s 16–17%, potentially pressuring margins. Rising credit costs, deterioration in asset quality, slower economic growth and geopolitical uncertainties are other risks. Investment View: Union Bank offers a compelling combination of growth, improving fundamentals and low valuations. Existing shareholders can consider holding, while new investors may build positions gradually with a 12–18 month horizon. The bank’s focus on retail/MSME lending and disciplined risk management provides a favourable setup for sustained shareholder value.
