ADANIPOWER
Ventures into Hydropower with a Strategic Bhutan JV

ADANIPOWER
's shares rose after the company announced its first hydropower venture—a joint venture (JV) with Bhutan's Druk Green Power Corp. to build a 570 MW project. While its initial capacity is modest compared to Adani's massive thermal portfolio, this marks a strategic diversification into a more stable and environmentally friendly energy source. → Project and Financial Details: Adani will hold a 49% stake in the JV, with an initial investment of ₹6,000 crore. The JV's financials won't be consolidated line by line but will contribute to Adani's net profit as a share in the venture. The project aligns with Adani's long-term goal of developing 5,000 MW of hydro capacity in Bhutan. → Strategic Advantages of Hydropower: Hydropower is generally seen as more profitable than thermal power because it doesn't rely on non-renewable fuels. It is also considered more stable and predictable than solar or wind energy. The electricity generated will be used to meet Bhutan's peak winter demand and will be exported to India during the summer. → Key Catalysts and Risks: A more significant driver for the stock in the near term will be the new Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) Adani needs to secure for its massive 12.5 GW of under-construction thermal capacity. The company needs a 50% success rate in upcoming PPA tenders from various states to tie up the remaining 7.5 GW of capacity. Adani Power's stock has outperformed its peers in 2025, gaining 19%, but it faces risks from potential execution challenges, fuel availability issues, and aggressive bidding from competitors in PPA tenders, which could pressure future margins.
