Bioplastics: A Greener Future and Balrampur Chini’s Bold Bet

As the world moves to curb plastic pollution, bioplastics are emerging as a promising alternative. Derived from sugarcane, bioplastics such as Polylactic Acid (PLA) offer a sustainable solution to the environmental hazards of single-use plastics. PLA is not only compostable in industrial facilities but also versatile, durable, and suitable for a wide range of applications—from straws and disposable cutlery to bottles. When processed, these products can be transformed into biogas, biofertilizer, or even energy, closing the loop on waste. Balrampur Chini Mills, one of India’s largest sugar producers, is seizing this opportunity with a ₹2,850 crore investment in the country’s first large-scale PLA plant. ➞The facility, set to begin operations by early 2027 in Uttar Pradesh, will divert about 1.3 lakh tonnes of sugar annually—roughly 10% of the company’s output—to produce 80,000 tonnes of PLA. ➞This strategic move is expected to generate ₹2,000 crore in revenue at full capacity, with robust EBITDA margins of around 35%. ➞The company is banking on strong demand from industries eager for eco-friendly materials, even at a premium: PLA is priced at ₹240/kg versus ₹125/kg for conventional plastics. However, due to PLA’s lighter weight and compatibility with PET manufacturing processes, the effective cost gap narrows significantly. ➞Despite the optimism, challenges remain. The cost of PLA production is still 2–2.5 times higher than traditional plastics, though operational efficiencies and lower energy use help offset this. The business is also exposed to fluctuations in sugarcane prices and policy changes, especially since PLA production relies heavily on cane as a raw material. Additionally, erratic weather and volatile sugar and ethanol markets could impact input costs and supply stability.
