Britannia ’s Recovery: Volume Growth Amid Margin Pressures

The pricing disruption in April and May, caused by competitors selling at odd price points like ₹4.5 and ₹8.9 following GST adjustments while Britannia stuck to standard ₹5 and ₹10 packs—normalized by June, aiding a sequential recovery in market share for $BRITANNIA . Resilient Revenue and Volume Growth: Driven by a recovery in general trade, rapid expansion in e-commerce, and strong demand across key states, volume grew 9% YoY in Q1FY27, boosting consolidated operating revenue by 9.5% YoY to ₹4,964 crore. Margin Compression from Input Costs: Gross margin contracted sequentially to 41.5% due to high raw material costs (palm oil, sugar, PNG/LPG, milk), with only about half of commodity inflation passed on through weight cuts, leading to an EBITDA margin dip to 16.8%. Mixed International Performance: While business in West Asia and North America faced geopolitical and localized disruptions, sales in Africa—particularly Kenya—remained strong, with overall international sales expected to turn positive from Q2FY27. Strategic Regionalization and Innovation: The management is prioritizing localization through regional teams and new product launches like the 'Dubai Kunafa Croissant' to sharpen execution and drive future expansion. Valuation and Outlook: Despite signs of operational recovery, elevated advertising expenditures, lingering inflation, and a high valuation (trading at an FY28 P/E of 43) may cap immediate stock upside over the near term.
