BSE
stock has become a market leader, more than doubling year-to-date and reaching a new all-time high, driven primarily by the success of its relaunched equity derivative products. The exchange's strong financial performance in Q2 FY25, coupled with its growing market share, has justified the recent valuation re-rating.
→ Strong Financials and Market Share Gains:
BSE's net profit nearly tripled in Q2 FY25, and it recorded its highest-ever quarterly operating revenue. This was fueled by a significant increase in transaction charges from the equity, equity derivatives, and mutual fund distribution segments.
The equity derivatives segment alone contributed approximately 46% of the total revenue in Q2 FY25.
After relaunching its derivative products in May 2023, BSE's market share in the equity derivatives segment, which is dominated by NSE, has surged from zero to 27% in September 2024.
BSE’s operating EBITDA margin reached 52% in Q2 FY25, exceeding the 50% threshold for the first time. This was achieved despite a substantial increase in regulatory contributions, which rose from ₹16 crore to ₹113 crore.
The average daily turnover (ADTO) in the cash market also saw robust growth, increasing by 88% year-over-year to ₹9,396 crore in H1 FY25 from ₹4,997 crore in H1 FY24.
→ Challenges and Outlook:
Recent regulatory changes, effective from November 18, 2024, are expected to impact equity derivatives volumes. BSE's market share in this segment has already shown a decline to 23% in October and 18% in November.
In response to SEBI's measures to strengthen the index derivatives framework, BSE will continue with Sensex derivatives as its sole weekly expiry contract. The Bankex and Sensex 50 contracts will shift to a monthly expiry cycle, and lot sizes for all index derivatives will be increased.
Analysts warn that if there's no meaningful reduction in options volume, the regulator might introduce fresh measures to curb the frenzied growth in the market.#FundamentalViews
