CSBBANK
: Resilient Business Growth Amidst Profitability Headwinds

CSBBANK
's stock has faced a surprising downturn despite gold prices being at an all-time high and a significant portion of its loan book being tied to gold. The recent correction is primarily attributed to a muted Q1 FY26 earnings report, impacted by margin compression and higher credit costs. → Strong Operational Performance: The bank's business fundamentals remain robust, with net advances growing by a substantial 31% YoY in Q1 FY26, far outpacing the industry average of ~10%. This growth was largely propelled by a 36% YoY increase in the gold loan portfolio, which now constitutes 46% of the total loan book. Deposit growth was also strong at 20% YoY, well ahead of the industry. The bank has revised its credit-to-deposit ratio guidance upwards, reflecting confidence in its liquidity. → Profitability and Cost Pressures: Profitability was hit as the Return on Assets (ROA) fell to 1.03% from 1.27% a year ago. This was driven by a dip in Net Interest Margin (NIM) to 3.54%, though the management anticipates a recovery to 3.5-4% from Q2 onwards due to easing wholesale funding costs. The bank's cost-to-income ratio remains high due to investments in technology upgrades, but is expected to ease in the long term, with a goal of reaching 50% by FY30. → Attractive Valuation and Future Strategy: Despite short-term challenges, CSB Bank's management has a long-term vision to diversify the loan portfolio by FY30, reducing the share of gold loans to 20% while increasing retail and SME lending. The stock's recent correction makes its valuation attractive, trading at 1.2 times its FY27 estimated book value. The core gold loan business continues to offer high margins, low credit costs, and low risk, providing a stable foundation for the bank's future growth trajectory.
