Dabur jumps 3% as September quarter demand recovers
Dabur India Limited [
DABUR
] shares jumped over 3% following a strong September quarter business update. The key driver was a quarter-on-quarter recovery in its beverage segment, aided by favourable seasonal factors.
Domestic FMCG demand is improving, marking a solid recovery phase. Revenue and volume growth are tracking well across core categories, with Home & Personal Care (HPC) heading toward its fourth straight quarter of double-digit expansion. However, cost inflation is weighing heavily on operational profitability. Crude-linked raw materials make up roughly 25% of Dabur’s cost basket, creating margin pressure that the company plans to counter through strategic price hikes and cost control.
Headline numbers highlight demand recovery, but the market overlooks the margin squeeze. While price hikes will protect gross margins in HPC, aggressive pricing in a competitive market risks dampening volume growth. Overseas markets also face uncertainty from Middle East conflicts, though Dabur aims to maintain high-teens growth internationally through mitigation plans.
Trading at 27x FY28 P/E, the stock sits at a notable discount to FMCG peers after falling over 20% in the past year. Valuation looks reasonable, but a sustained re-rating depends on whether price hikes offset input costs without hurting consumer demand.
Investors should monitor raw material cost trends, execution of price hikes, and Q2 earnings results to see if margins hold up.
Dabur remains an attractive long-term FMCG pick, but margin pressure keeps near-term upside capped until Q2 financial results confirm cost management success.
