's "District by Zomato" - A New Frontier for Out-of-Home Consumption 🌆
Strategic Focus and Vision:
ETERNAL
's newest venture, District by Zomato, is an experimental division focused on "going out" experiences. The company is not primarily concerned with immediate margins, but rather with achieving product-market fit for its new offerings. The goal is to create a single, compelling app for out-of-home consumption that encourages people to find and engage in activities beyond their homes.
Hybrid App Functionality: District aims to be a unique hybrid consumer app that merges diverse offerings such as restaurant bookings, entertainment, and retail. It provides users with a wide range of options, including comedy shows, concerts, spa appointments, and offline shopping vouchers. The CEO, Rahul Ganjoo, states that this integrated approach is a first of its kind.
Financial Performance and User Base: In the June 2025 quarter, the division's revenue was ₹207 crore. Despite being a loss-making segment with operational losses of ₹48 crore, the division recorded 2 million monthly active users, each transacting approximately twice a month. The company aims for the app to eventually scale up to $3 billion in net order value and $150 million in adjusted EBITDA.
Diversification and Monetization: District's user acquisition strategy is diversified, with new users coming from online advertising (40%), exclusive event sales (30%), and cross-promotion from parent company apps Zomato and Blinkit (30%). The app is also piloting a new feature called "Stores," which allows users to find and pay at nearby offline retail outlets. This feature could serve as a future revenue stream through "discovery fees" paid by retailers to appear in search results. The app also plans to expand its event offerings beyond large-scale shows to include smaller, regional events.
