Hindustan Unilever falls 16% in 2026 as demand stays weak
Hindustan Unilever Limited (NSE:
HINDUNILVR
) has dropped 16% in 2026, touching levels last seen five years ago. Unfavourable macroeconomic conditions and a sustained slowdown in FMCG volume growth are dragging the stock down.
Rising crude derivatives, elevated palm oil prices, and a weaker rupee have pushed up input costs. While the company is absorbing part of these costs to drive volume growth, consumer demand remains muted. Rural volume growth has slowed for two consecutive quarters, while urban demand has also decelerated.
Headwinds from quick commerce and rising D2C competition are forcing higher ad spends to defend urban market ***** headline price drop reflects weak demand, but it misses the long-term strategic shift. Management is deliberately tilting towards premiumisation to capture higher-margin urban spend. Operating profit margins are guided towards 22%-24%, down from past peaks, as input cost pressures linger and capex rises.
Lower margins with muted volume growth will keep return on capital under pressure in the short ***** for any recovery in rural volume growth and stabilization in raw material inflation. An open offer by parent entity Unilever to consolidate its 62% stake remains a key external catalyst for valuation ***** a cautious view until volume growth picks up.
