ICICI Prudential Life Q2 VNB rises 20.3% to ₹712 crore

ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Ltd (

ICICIPRULI
) reported strong Q2FY27 growth. The quarter benefited from a better product mix, with higher contribution from protection products helping VNB margins improve by 98 basis points to 25.4%. Protection APE grew 34% year-on-year, while savings products APE rose about 12%. What matters is not just the growth, but whether it can continue. The company is now moving into a tougher comparison base after the GST-exemption-led surge in business during the second half of FY26. That makes sustaining current APE growth harder. The headline growth also hides some pressure points. Ulips, which contribute more than half of savings APE, grew only 6.6%. Since Ulip demand is linked to equity market sentiment, a sustained recovery may take time even if markets improve. Another key risk is regulation. Proposed Irdai changes on commissions could affect insurers that rely heavily on banks and other non-agent channels. ICICI Prudential Life derived 54% of retail APE from non-agent channels in Q2FY27, which may require adjustments to its distribution strategy if the proposals are implemented in their current form. The company's reliance on ICICI Bank, which contributes 17% of retail APE, also highlights concentration risk. Investors should also watch the potential increase in market share supply after Prudential Plc.'s acquisition of a controlling stake in Bharti Life Insurance, which may necessitate a reduction in its holding in ICICI Prudential Life. View: The quarter was strong, but the bigger story is whether growth and margins can hold up amid regulatory uncertainty, weaker Ulip momentum and a tougher base. Watch commission rules and H2FY27 growth trends closely. Disclosure: This post is for educational purposes only and should not be construed as investment advice.
