INFY
and Peers: A Tale of Two Strategies in a Volatile Market

INFY
is the first major Indian IT firm to express confidence in a market turnaround, contrasting with the cautious stances of competitors like TCS and Wipro. This newfound optimism is driven by expectations of improved tech spending and a successful margin-management strategy. → Infosys's Optimistic Outlook: Infosys's CEO, Salil Parekh, believes tech spending will improve as macroeconomic uncertainty in developed markets, which account for over 75% of its business, eases. The company raised the lower end of its FY26 revenue guidance to 1-3% (in constant currency), up from its previous projection of a flat 3% growth. This improved guidance is partly attributed to recent acquisitions, including MRE Consulting in the US and cybersecurity firm The Missing Link in Australia. Infosys's confidence is also supported by its margin expansion program, Project Maximus, which focuses on improving large deal execution and reducing costs.
HCLTECH
's CEO, C. Vijayakumar, also noted that the market environment has stabilized. Like Infosys, HCLTech also narrowed its revenue guidance, now expecting 3-5% constant currency growth. However, this growth comes at the cost of profitability. HCLTech lowered its full-year operating margin target to 17-18%, a move analysts believe is a strategic trade-off to secure more business. In Q1 FY26, its operating margins declined by 160 basis points to 16.3%. Infosys's positive tone stands in stark contrast to
TCS
, which recently announced a 2% workforce reduction (12,200 employees) as a strategic initiative. This move is seen as an attempt to protect profitability, as TCS's operating margins, at 24.5%, are the highest among its peers. TCS reported a 0.59% sequential revenue decline in the last quarter, its worst among the top five Indian IT firms, raising concerns among analysts about a potential revenue decline in FY26 due to the completion of its large BSNL contract.
