Intensifying Competition in India’s 4W EV Market

India’s electric vehicle (EV) landscape is on the cusp of a major shake-up, with established domestic players like

preparing to defend their turf against a wave of global entrants and new launches. The coming months promise heightened rivalry as multinational giants such as Tesla, VinFast, and Kia gear up to unveil their latest EV offerings and open pre-bookings. ➞ Tesla is set to introduce its Model Y series, targeting a premium segment with an expected price around ₹55 lakh. ➞ VinFast, the Vietnamese automaker, is making its Indian debut with pre-bookings for its electric SUVs, the VF6 (₹25 lakh) and VF7 (₹50 lakh). ➞ Kia is readying the launch of its much-anticipated Carens Clavis EV, expected to be priced between ₹19–20 lakh. This influx of international brands is poised to heat up the 4W EV segment, which has already witnessed a surge in adoption—EV penetration in the passenger car segment jumped from 2.5% in June 2024 to 4.4% by June 2025. The aggressive entry of these global players, combined with government incentives and growing consumer interest, is set to challenge the dominance of homegrown manufacturers and accelerate innovation, pricing strategies, and product launches across the board.
