Larsen & Toubro explores new manufacturing businesses

LT
is evaluating multiple new manufacturing opportunities, including nuclear fuel rods, tunnel boring machines, drones, rocket components, battery energy storage systems and EV traction motors. Manufacturing currently contributes just 6% of L&T's ₹1.47 trillion H1 FY27 revenue, but the company wants to at least double its share over time. The move reflects a broader strategy to reduce dependence on its project execution business, which remains the largest contributor to revenue. Management believes emerging opportunities in nuclear energy, defence, space, underground infrastructure and energy storage could create new long-term growth engines. What matters is not the announcement of new products itself, but the economics behind them. According to industry estimates cited in the report, manufacturing businesses can generate margins of 15%+, compared with 8-9% in infrastructure projects. I The headline also misses that this is part of a longer diversification journey. L&T has already built sizeable technology and financial services franchises, which together contributed 29% of revenue in H1 FY27. Manufacturing appears to be the company's next strategic pillar. Investors should also note the execution risk. Several opportunities are still under evaluation. Businesses such as nuclear fuel components, space manufacturing and advanced engineering products require significant R&D, regulatory approvals, technical capabilities and capital investment before they can contribute meaningfully. What to watch next is whether L&T announces concrete investments, partnerships, capacity creation plans or commercial orders in these areas. View: Positive from a long-term strategic perspective, but meaningful financial impact will depend on successful execution and scaling of these manufacturing ventures.
