MUTHOOTFIN
: Structural Story Intact, Near‑Term Froth Visible

MUTHOOTFIN
has rallied nearly 80% YTD—far outpacing both the Nifty and the rise in gold price—driven by strong gold‑loan growth, improving yields, and benign asset quality. While the structural opportunity in gold financing remains compelling, the stock’s sharp re‑rating and dependence on firm gold prices raise questions about near‑term upside. Gold loans form ~85% of Muthoot’s book and grew a robust 45% YoY in Q2 FY26, lifting consolidated loan growth to 42%. Management has doubled its FY26 gold‑loan growth guidance to 30–35%. Firm gold prices and tighter RBI norms on unsecured loans have pushed households toward gold‑backed borrowing, strengthening demand. Despite competition, Muthoot recorded 5% YoY growth in gold tonnage and 7% growth in customers, indicating market share gains. With Indian households holding ~25,000 tonnes of gold, the long‑term opportunity remains deep and underpenetrated. Q2 yields improved sharply due to ₹300 crore of interest income from old NPA recoveries and higher contribution from high‑yield schemes. Organic yields remain healthy at 18.5–18.75%. Funding costs declined sequentially and are expected to fall further as MCLR and NCD rates soften. Management is confident of sustaining 9%+ spreads. High gold prices have encouraged borrowers to proactively repay and reclaim jewellery. Muthoot’s strategy of offering more time to delinquent borrowers has strengthened customer loyalty and recoveries. Non‑gold lending remains modest (~15% of book), reducing diversification risk. RBI’s FY27 gold‑loan guidelines introduce tiered LTVs and stricter repayment norms but are not expected to materially hurt Muthoot. Small‑ticket borrowers benefit from higher LTVs (up to 85%). However, after an 80% rally, valuations look stretched. While the structural story is intact, the near‑term risk‑reward skews toward booking profits and re‑entering at better levels.
