NMDC
Rises on Price Hike, Eyes Diversification

NMDC
shares surged ~8% this week after the miner raised iron ore prices on 5 April, lifting lumps and fines by ₹500/tonne and ₹450/tonne, respectively. While markets cheered the move as a sign of returning pricing power amid strong steel demand, the bigger story lies in NMDC’s record production and diversification into critical minerals. With FY26 output crossing 53 MT for the first time, the company is targeting 100 MT by FY30 under a ₹70,000 crore expansion roadmap. Operational Performance Price hikes: Latest increase follows March hikes of ₹100/tonne (lumps) and ₹50/tonne (fines). Production: FY26 output at 53 MT, up 21% YoY; first time crossing 50 MT. Target: 100 MT by FY30, supported by expansion capex. Steel demand: India aims for 300 MT crude steel capacity by FY31; iron ore demand projected at 430 MT (ICICI Securities). Diversification & Optionality Ventures into diamonds, gold, coal, and now rare earth minerals via partnership with Gujarat Mineral Development Corp. Aligns with India’s push for self-reliance in critical minerals. Rare-earth exposure enhances narrative quality, often driving PSU re-ratings ahead of earnings materialization. Risks & Challenges Regulatory caps: Environmental clearance currently at 65 MTPA, limiting expansion beyond FY27. Karnataka tax proposal: Retrospective levy on mineral-bearing land could cost NMDC ~₹14,000 crore. Global competition: Guinea’s Simandou Mine expected to ramp up to 120 MT by 2030. China factor: Steel production could rebound as Beijing pushes sector reforms. Financials & Valuation Net profit: ₹6,540 crore in FY25; ₹5,400 crore in 9MFY26. Valuation: trades at 6.6x FY27E EV/EBITDA (Bloomberg consensus). Conclusion NMDC’s near-term pricing gains are welcome, but the long-term story hinges on execution of expansion plans and diversification into rare earths. Regulatory clarity and global supply dynamics will determine whether the current rally evolves into a sustained re-rating.
