to Enter Nuclear Energy with 2,800 MW Project

, India's largest power generator, is set to enter the nuclear energy sector by laying the foundation for a 2,800 MW nuclear power project at Banswara in Rajasthan next month. This project will feature four pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs), each with a capacity of 700 MW. → Ambitious Nuclear Goals: NTPC's Chairman, Gurdeep Singh, stated that the company plans to add 30 gigawatt (GW) of nuclear power capacity by 2047, a decision they've made after careful consideration. They will be undertaking nuclear projects both as part of a joint venture (JV) with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and on a standalone basis. → Strategic Partnerships and Future Plans: NTPC is collaborating with various service and technology providers, including Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE), L&T, EDF, Rosatom, and Holtec, and is exploring more sites across the country. The first unit of the Rajasthan project is scheduled to be commissioned in 2031, with the full plant expected to be ready by 2036. India's total nuclear power capacity is targeted to reach 200 GW by 2047. NTPC's aggressive push into this sector is a key step towards achieving this national goal.
