Nuclear Power Race has a new entrant

IOC
Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., India's foremost oil refiner and marketer, is embarking on a significant strategic shift towards nuclear energy. Chairman Arvinder Singh Sahney recently announced the company's plans to develop small modular reactors (SMRs) and large nuclear power plants within the nation. This move marks a renewed focus on nuclear diversification for Indian Oil, despite its previous collaborations with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) on similar ventures. The decision is largely driven by the substantial power demands of Indian Oil's expansive refineries, which Sahney noted consume energy comparable to the 200 MWe capacity of India's indigenous Bharat SMR (BSR) design. While Indian Oil did not participate in NPCIL's recent tenders for captive SMRs, the company is now actively considering constructing these reactors to meet its own considerable energy needs. This strategic re-evaluation underscores Indian Oil's commitment to securing its energy future and exploring innovative power generation solutions.
