India’s leading retailers—Reliance Retail, $TRENT ’s Star Bazaar, and Amazon India—are piloting advanced two‑dimensional QR codes on private‑label products to enhance inventory visibility, reduce wastage, and improve margins. These codes can store detailed data such as batch numbers, expiry dates, and pricing, far beyond traditional barcodes. Operational Efficiency & Margin Gains: The initiative aims to help retailers manage ageing inventory, optimize replenishment, and minimize losses from expired or mismatched stock. Enhanced data transparency is expected to accelerate stock movement and reduce write‑offs, directly improving profitability. Reliance Retail’s 2027 Initiative: Reliance is collaborating with GS1 India, the global standards body for barcodes, to implement the new system across its private‑label portfolio by 2027. The project underscores Reliance’s broader digital transformation strategy and its push to strengthen supply‑chain intelligence. Private Labels as Growth Engines: Retailers are increasingly relying on private labels—brands like Campa, Independence (Reliance), Fabsta, Klia (Star Bazaar), and Presto, Vedaka (Amazon)—to drive growth. These owned brands have evolved from low‑cost alternatives into major consumer businesses spanning staples, packaged foods, and household products. Industry Impact & Competitive Pressure: Analysts note that private labels are now comparable in scale to established FMCG players, putting pressure on traditional consumer goods firms. For instance, D‑Mart’s Premia and Swaad brands contribute nearly 70% of its revenue, while Star Bazaar’s private labels account for 73% of its ₹850 crore FY26 revenue.
