Reliance Industries sees 3% MWPL bets before Jio IPO

Two traders have built leveraged positions exceeding 3% each of

RELIANCE
’ marketwide position limit (MWPL) ahead of the ₹30,213 crore Jio Platforms IPO, one of the largest such positions seen on the stock. Reliance Industries Limited (RELIANCE) has witnessed an unusual build-up in derivatives exposure, with market participants taking large positions just before the listing of its telecom and digital subsidiary, Jio Platforms. Exchange data shows both traders increased their positions through October, despite Reliance shares hitting a 52-week low of ₹1,152.20 earlier this month before recovering to ₹1,211. What matters is not the positioning itself, but what it may signal. Analysts cited in the report note that positions of this size are rarely seen in Reliance, even during major events such as Meta’s investment in Jio or the pandemic-era market volatility. That makes this activity noteworthy. The headline focus is on the size of the bets, but the bigger factor for investors is whether the Jio Platforms listing changes how the market values Reliance. Brokerages believe a listed Jio could provide a transparent market value for one of Reliance’s largest growth businesses, potentially narrowing the conglomerate discount often applied to the parent company. At the same time, investors should avoid assuming that large derivatives positions guarantee a bullish outcome. Such exposure can reflect hedging as well as directional views. Reliance also continues to face challenges from foreign investor selling, higher oil prices and currency weakness, all of which have weighed on performance. What to watch next is the IPO response, listing valuation and whether Reliance sustains any re-rating after Jio begins trading. Those factors are likely to matter more than the derivatives build-up itself.
