’s ambitious goal of reaching 40 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) domestic steelmaking capacity by FY30 is facing skepticism from analysts due to an unclear execution roadmap beyond its immediate projects.
→ At the end of FY25, the company's local capacity stood at 26.6 mtpa, a substantial distance from the 40 mtpa target set by Chairman N. Chandrasekaran in July 2024.
→ The two primary projects currently underway are the expansion of the Kalinganagar plant and scaling up the subsidiary Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd (NINL).
→ The critical near-term goal is to achieve full capacity utilization of 8 mtpa at Kalinganagar by the end of 2025. This involves completing the Phase-II expansion, which adds 5 mtpa capacity to the existing 3 mtpa.
→ The expansion of NINL (acquired through privatization) from 1 mtpa to 5 mtpa is critical for the long steel market (used in construction and infrastructure), but the necessary clearances are still pending.
→ Completion of both the Kalinganagar and NINL expansions will only bring the total capacity to 31-32 mtpa, still significantly short of the 40 mtpa target.
→ Analysts note a lack of public announcements regarding the execution details and timelines for the subsequent expansion phases at Meramandali and Kalinganagar.
→ CEO T.V. Narendran indicated that the company is "ready to go to the board maybe by October, November as soon as we get the environment clearance" for the NINL Phase-1 expansion.
→ Brokerage firms highlight that the restructuring of Tata Steel's European operations and a likely 3 to 3.5-year commissioning period for new units could delay capital expenditure for the Indian expansions.
→ Analysts warn that Tata Steel could face capacity constraints after FY28 if the project execution does not accelerate, especially given the strong domestic steel demand.#FundamentalViews#StockInNews
