US Pharma Tariffs likely to kick in soon

US President Donald Trump has indicated a strong likelihood of imposing tariffs on pharmaceutical imports, potentially starting as early as August 1. The implementation timeline is expected to be similar to that for semiconductors. The proposed tariffs could be substantial, with mentions of rates as high as 200% after a one-year grace period. This is intended to incentivize pharmaceutical companies to move their manufacturing operations back to the United States. The move is framed as a national security measure under the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. It targets drugmakers like Eli Lilly, Merck, and Pfizer that produce overseas and is expected to increase drug costs for American consumers. An agreement with India is noted as being "among the most likely." President Trump expressed satisfaction with recent communications, suggesting India might secure an exemption or a more favorable, tailored tariff rate. For smaller nations that do not negotiate a specific deal, a tariff of "a little over 10 per cent" is being considered. This indicates a multi-tiered approach based on bilateral negotiations. Given that the US is a primary export market for the Indian pharmaceutical industry, any tariff imposition could significantly impact major players. Companies with substantial revenue from the US market would be particularly vulnerable if a favorable deal is not reached. These include:

SUNPHARMA
DRREDDY
CIPLA
LUPIN
