selling off (up to ~14% intraday in parts of the pack) is the market quickly repricing a single fear: if Chinese bidders are allowed back into government contracts, competitive intensity rises & margins/market share assumptions for domestic-heavy order books get reset.
This is less about today’s earnings & more about the terminal value of future EPC/power-equipment order flows—where even a small probability shift can cause sharp valuation adjustment in crowded “capex winners.”
A Reuters-cited report said the finance ministry may scrap 5-year-old restrictions on Chinese firms bidding for govt contracts.
Those curbs—tightened post-2020—required Chinese bidders to register with a govt committee and obtain political/security clearance, effectively restricting participation in sensitive procurement.
ET notes BHEL closed ~9% lower, while ABB and Siemens fell ~4–5% and L&T ~2–3%—a clear signal the market is targeting “tender-exposed” names, not just selling the index.
The logic is straightforward: re-entry of China-linked suppliers can mean undercut bids, faster equipment availability in some categories, and pressure on pricing power for domestic OEMs/system integrators in large govt-led capex.
If restrictions are eased, the policy trade-off becomes explicit: faster project execution and potentially lower costs versus domestic manufacturing protection and security concerns.
CNBC-TV18 also flagged that it could not independently verify the Reuters report—so the selloff is being driven by “policy probability,” not confirmed rule change.
Policymakers need clearer signalling on the framework: which sectors/contracts are open, what security vetting remains, and whether “reciprocity/local value-add” conditions apply.
Investors should watch for follow-through confirmation & then track tender behavior because that will decide whether this is a temporary scare or a structural de-rating.
