Gaming Apps Pause Real-Money Games After India’s Ban Moves Forward

India’s Parliament has enacted the Promotion & Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, ushering in a swift and sweeping ban on all real-money online gaming. In response, platforms—Dream11, MPL, WinZO, PokerBaazi, Zupee, RummyCulture, Probo, My11Circle, & others—have halted paid contests and real-money offerings overnight, shifting instead to free-to-play models. This regulatory pivot effectively dismantles a previously booming sector. Forecasts had pegged India’s real-money gaming business at nearly $3.6 billion by 2029. Its abrupt collapse threatens significant revenue loss, business disruption, and potential layoffs across an ecosystem that had become deeply integrated with tech, investment, & sports domains. From an industry standpoint, this marks a fundamental shift. Companies that built growth strategies around real-money offerings now must urgently reimagine their business models. Free-to-play formats, esports, subscription services, & gamified retail are emerging as viable alternatives. But the new competitive landscape demands swift capability pivoting, technological innovation, & monetization reinvention. The gaming sector drove sizeable advertising spends, particularly in digital media & during high-viewership events like the IPL. Its sudden suppression could erode ad revenues and impact entertainment partnerships. Meanwhile, startup funding valuations tied to the sector may need recalibration as investor risk appetite adjusts. Nevertheless, there’s a longer-term opportunity in regulated transformation. By establishing a clear legal framework that supports e-sports and non-monetary skill games, the government aims to reposition gaming as entertainment and digital sport—not gambling. Platforms that can pivot quickly into regulated, engaging formats, while safeguarding users, may emerge stronger—helping fulfill India’s vision of a thriving, sustainable digital gaming ecosystem.
