Gold lending companies in focus due to regulation tightening
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) plans to enforce stricter underwriting and monitoring procedures for gold loans to ensure financial stability and curb unethical practices in the rapidly expanding segment. Since September 2024, gold loans have surged by 50%, driven by record gold prices and tighter unsecured lending norms. The RBI has identified irregularities, including inadequate background checks, improper appraisal and valuation of gold, and misuse of loan funds, through audits over the past 12-16 months. Lenders, including non-banks and fintech agents, have been found conducting improper gold sourcing, weighing, and unauthorized auctions without informing borrowers. The central bank aims to standardize protocols across all lenders and ensure adherence to regulations, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in the gold loan sector.
