Hero MotoCorp Bets Big on Scooters and EVs With ₹1,500 Crore Expansion Push

HEROMOTOCO
plans to invest over ₹1,500 crore in FY27 to expand manufacturing capacity, with a major focus on scooters and electric vehicles. The company aims to nearly double scooter production capacity as demand for models like Destini and Xoom continues to rise. Hero currently produces around 60,000 scooters monthly and is targeting output closer to 1 lakh units. The company is also scaling its EV operations, increasing monthly capacity from 15,000 units to 25,000 units, with plans for further expansion by year-end. In addition, Hero has committed more than ₹700 crore toward a global parts centre in South India to strengthen its accessories and aftermarket business. Management stated that demand momentum remained stable through April and early May despite geopolitical uncertainty linked to West Asia. Industry Outlook India’s two-wheeler market is increasingly shifting toward scooters, premium motorcycles, and electric mobility. Hero MotoCorp’s aggressive investment signals that traditional motorcycle-heavy companies are repositioning themselves to capture changing urban mobility trends. At the same time, the sector is becoming more capital-intensive. Companies are now forced to invest heavily in EVs, manufacturing upgrades, and technology while still maintaining profitability in conventional vehicles. This creates pressure on margins even during periods of strong demand growth. Competition is also intensifying, especially in scooters and EVs, where players like TVS, Bajaj, and Ola Electric are expanding aggressively. The industry’s future growth may therefore depend less on volumes alone and more on execution, product innovation, and capacity utilization. Overall, the sector outlook remains positive due to rising mobility demand and EV adoption, but profitability will increasingly depend on how efficiently companies manage expansion costs and competitive pressure.
