Indian Bank profit rises 15% as asset quality improves

Research Analyst: UJVIN NEVATIA (PROPRIETOR: NEVAT INVESTMENTS) | SEBI Registration No.: INH100009628 Indian Bank Limited (

INDIANB
) reported a 14.7% year-on-year increase in standalone net profit to ₹3,462 crore in Q2 FY27. What happened? Net interest income (NII) rose 18% to ₹7,719 crore, while operating profit increased 47% to ₹7,090 crore. Other income grew to ₹3,953 crore from ₹2,487 crore a year earlier, supported partly by gains associated with the listing of NSE shares held by the bank. Asset quality improved, with gross non-performing assets (GNPA) declining to 1.61% from 2.60% a year earlier. Net NPA stood at 0.14%. The capital adequacy ratio, however, declined to 16.21% from 17.31% a year earlier. Why does it matter? Higher NII and operating profit indicate stronger core banking performance. However, part of the increase in other income came from NSE-related gains, which may not recur at the same level. The decline in capital adequacy also warrants monitoring as the bank expands lending. My view The results show improved earnings and asset quality. However, assessing the underlying trend requires separating recurring banking income from one-off gains and monitoring capital strength. What I am watching next I would track NII growth, deposit mobilisation, credit growth, asset quality and capital adequacy to assess whether the bank can sustain profitability.
